Calibration Target

Working with an electrical engineer on our team I designed and built this device to help them calibrate thermal cameras. They needed a device that could cool a surface to -20° C. I achieved this using a large thermoelectric Peltier device and PC water cooling components to chill a large copper plate.

Design

I designed an assembly to sandwich a Peltier device between a server CPU water block and a copper plate. I embedded three thermocouples in the copper plate so the engineers could accurately measure its temperature and adjust the power to the Peltier device. The calibration area was painted with matte paint to reduce ambient IR reflections and allow the camera to accurately see the temperature of the plate.
